SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE TEXAS FLORAL
ENDOWMENT
The Texas Floral Endowment Board of Directors selects awardees for the
scholarships listed below. Application forms can be obtained from the Texas
Floral Endowment office at 6300 La Calma, Suite 510, Austin, TX, PO Box 140255,
Austin, TX 78714 and must be completed and received no later than April 16th.
Awardees are announced during the Endowment presentation each year in July at
the Texas State Florists’ Association Annual Convention.
The Texas Floral Endowment has a strong commitment to the principles of
diversity in all areas of the floral industry. In that spirit, the applications
for scholarships are open to all qualified individuals based on the specific
criteria of each scholarship.
The amount of each scholarship is listed with the criteria and is received once
proper documentation is made satisfactory with the Board of Directors.
ALLIED FLORIST OF HOUSTON SCHOLARSHIP
IN MEMORY OF WAYNE AND MABEL FISHER
The year 2010 Allied Florists of Houston Scholarship in memory of Wayne and
Mabel Fisher Scholarship has been established in the amount of $500.00. This
scholarship may be used at any accredited floral design school, state
association credentialed class, community, junior college, university level of
attendance at a regional, state or national floral industry convention.
Priority will be given to applicants entering TSFA’s TMF/TMFA program. The
scholarship will be awarded to the highest scoring applicant who is a member in
good standing in the Allied Florists of Houston. Applicants who are also
members in Texas State Florists Association will be given priority. The
recipient of this scholarship must utilize scholarship within two years of the
award. There are no other restrictions.

ALLIED FLORIST OF HOUSTON SCHOLARSHIP
HONORING LAVON BANKHEAD AAF AIFD PFCI TMFA
The year 2010 Allied Florists of Houston Scholarship in honor of LaVon Bankhead
AAF AIFD PFCI TMFA has been established in the amount of $500.00. The
scholarship may only be used to attend the PFCI Commentating Class. Should a
qualified applicant not apply to pursue PFCI credentials and applicant pursuing
AIFD credentials or Texas Master Florists Credentials may be considered. The
scholarship will be awarded to the highest scoring applicant who is a member in
good standing in the Allied Florists of Houston. Applicants who are also
members in Texas State Florists Association will be given priority. The
recipient of this scholarship must utilize the scholarship within 2 years of
the award. There are no other restrictions.

ALLIED FLORIST OF HOUSTON/SOUTHERN FLORAL COMPANY
JIM JOHNSON AAF AIFD TMFA TRIBUTE SCHOLASHIP
The 2010 Allied Florist of Houston/Southern Floral Co. Jim Johnson AAF AIFD
TMFA Tribute Scholarship has been established in the amount of $250. Any floral
industry person may apply for the scholarship to attend the Texas State
Florists’ Association Texas Certified Florists’ Program providing he/she meets
the criteria established by the Texas Certified Florist Program or may apply
for this scholarship in the form of a certificate to attend the Texas State
Florists’ Association convention. The applicant must be a Texas resident. The
recipient of this scholarship must utilize the scholarship with in 2 years of
award. There are no other restrictions.

FLORAL INDUSTRY TUITION CERTIFICATE
The year 2010 Teleflora Education Center Tuition Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $500.00. This certificate is to attend the
Teleflora Education Center in Oklahoma City, OK. The applicant must be a
Teleflora retail flower shop owner or employee and have a minimum of two years
design experience, in addition be affiliated with a Teleflora shop. The
recipient of the scholarship must comply with the redemption procedures
established by Teleflora and must utilize Scholarship funds for the 2011
Teleflora class year.

GREENLEAF WHOLESALE FLORIST OF TEXAS SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Greenleaf Wholesale Florist of Texas scholarship has been established
in the amount of $500.00. this scholarship to attend a community, junior
college or university has been created to assist 1)a retail florist’s family
member or 2) a graduating high school student pursuing a career in the floral
industry. Qualifications will be based 50% on GPA and 50% on the subject essay
of “Why this Scholarship is Important to Me.” The applicant must be a Texas
resident. Scholarship must be utilized within two years of the award. Please
include GPA, Subject Essay, Parent(s) name and retail floral business (if
applicable).

LEWIS “PEANUTS” RUSHING AAF TMF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Lewis “Peanuts” Rushing Memorial Scholarship has been established in
the amount of $500 annually to be given by “Peanuts” wife, Frankie Rushing and
daughter, Shari Sandlin. The scholarship may be used for Texas State Florists’
Association’s Texas Certified Florist Program or to obtain an Advanced TMF
Certification. The applicant must be a Texas resident with preference to an
Allied Florist of Houston member or to an individual who is employed in an AFH
member shop. The recipient of this scholarship must utilize within two years of
award. There are no other restrictions.

NATIONAL DESIGNER OF THE YEAR SCHOLARSHIP
The year 2010 NAFA Designer of the Year Competition Scholarship has been
established annually by Texas Floral Endowment to reward the Texas State
Florists’ Association Texas Cup Winner. This $650.00 scholarship, to be applied
toward expenses, was established because of Texas Floral Endowment Board’s
belief in an individual’s pursuit of their creative talent. The NAFA Designer
of the Year Competition is a national design competition that honors the
nation’s most talented floral designers. The 2010 Texas Cup Winner must utilize
this scholarship at the 2010 NAFA Designer of the Year Competition.

SEYMOUR CARREN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Seymour Carren Memorial Scholarship has been established in the amount
of $500.00 to be given annually by Teleflora. It was established as a tribute
to the late Mr. Seymour Carren of Carren’s Flowers in Dallas, Texas in
celebration of the importance that Mr. Carren placed on educating young people
and developing their interest in the floral industry. The purpose of the
scholarship is as a tribute to the late Mr. Seymour Carren and to support a
deserving high school student who is interested in entering the field of floral
design school, state association credentialed class or at a community, junior
college or to the university level. The recipient of this scholarship must
utilize scholarship within two years of the award. There are no other
restrictions.

SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF FLORAL DESIGN (SAFD)
SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Society for the Advancement of Floral Designs Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $750.00 to be awarded in the year 2010. This
scholarship may be used at a 2 or 4 year accredited school with a major in
horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture and may be used only for books,
tuition or board. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior with a
2.5 grade average (with a transcript) and must provide two references and write
a paragraph explaining why they want/need the scholarship. The application
process must be completed correctly. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a
resident of Texas for two years.

SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF FLORAL DESIGN (SAFD)
SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Society for the Advancement of Floral Designs Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $500.00 to be awarded in the year 2010. This
scholarship may be used at a 2 year accredited Texas Community College or
Floral Design School with a major in horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture
and may be used only for books, tuition or board. The applicant must be a
graduating high school senior or college student pursuing a career in the
floricultural, agricultural or horticultural industry. They must provide a
transcript to show a grade average of 2.5 and provide two references and write
a paragraph explaining why they want/need the scholarship. The applicant should
be involved in Volunteer or Community service work. The application process
must be completed correctly. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a
resident of Texas for two years.

SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF FLORAL DESIGN (SAFD)
FLORAL INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Society for the Advancement of Floral Designs Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $500.00 to be awarded in the year 2010. This
scholarship may be used at a 2 year accredited Texas Community College or
Floral Design School with a major in horticulture, landscaping, or floriculture
and may be used only for books, tuition or board. The scholarship will be
awarded to an adult changing careers or a student wanting to complete their
Texas Master Florist Certification in order to pursue a career in the
floricultural, agricultural or horticultural industry. They must provide two
references and write a paragraph explaining why they want/need the scholarship
and show floral related awards. The application process must be completed
correctly. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Texas for two
years.

SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF FLORAL DESIGN (SAFD)
TSFA CONVENTION SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Society for the Advancement of Floral Designs Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $500 to be awarded in the year 2010. This
scholarship is to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association Convention and
may be used to defray the costs of travel, hotel and classes. The applicant
must want further certification and have a talent or passion for flowers. They
must provide two references and write a paragraph explaining why they want/need
the scholarship and show floral related awards. The application process must be
completed correctly. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of
Texas for two years.

FLORAL CAREER SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Society for the Advancement of Floral Designs Scholarship has been
established in the amount of $500 to be awarded in the year 2010. This
scholarship is to attend the Texas Certified Florist Program. The applicant
must want further certification and have a talent or passion for flowers. They
must provide two references and write a paragraph explaining why they want/need
the scholarship. The applicant should show their floral related awards and
outline volunteer activities or community work. The application process must be
completed correctly. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of
Texas for two years.

SOUTHERN FLORAL COMPANY JIM JOHNSON AAF AIFD TMFA
TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Southern Floral Co. Jim Johnson AAF AIFD TMFA Tribute Scholarship has
been established in the amount of $250. Any floral industry person may apply
for the scholarship to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association Texas
Certified Florists’ Program providing he/she meets the criteria established by
the Texas Certified Florist Program or may apply for this scholarship in the
form of a certificate to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association
convention. The applicant must be a Texas resident. The recipient of this
scholarship must utilize the scholarship with in 2 years of award. There are no
other restrictions.

SYLVIA CUP COMPETITION SCHOLARSHIP
The year 2010 Sylvia Cup Competition Scholarship has been established annually
by Teleflora to reward the Texas State Florists’ Association Texas Cup Winner.
This $700.00 scholarship to be applied toward expenses was established because
of Teleflora’s belief in an individual’s pursuit of their creative talent. The
Sylvia Cup Competition is a national design competition that honors the
nation’s most talented floral designers. The contest is named after one of the
industry’s leading designers and businesswomen, Sylvia MacGuffog Valencia AAF.
The 2009 Texas Cup Winner must utilize this scholarship at the 2010 Sylvia Cup
Competition.

TEXAS FLORAL ENDOWMENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Floral Endowment Memorial Scholarship has been established in the
amount of $500 and will be offered in 2010 in memory of those who dedicated
their lives to the Texas State Florists’ Association and the floral industry.
This scholarship may be used at any accredited floral design school, state
association or credentialed class, community, junior college, university level
or attendance at a regional or state floral industry convention. The applicant
must be a Texas Resident. The recipient of this scholarship must utilize
scholarship within two years of the award. There are no other restrictions.

TEXAS STATE FLORISTS’ ASSOCIATION PAST PRESIDENTS’
SCHOLARSHIP
The Texas State Florists’ Association Past Presidents have established one
$500.00 scholarship to be awarded in the year 2010. Any floral industry person
may apply for the scholarship to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association
Texas Certified Florists Program providing he/she meets the criteria
established by the Texas Certified Florist Program. The recipient of this
scholarship must utilize scholarship within two years of the award. There are
no other restrictions.

TSFA CONVENTION TUITION SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Texas State Florists’ Association Convention Tuition Scholarship has
been established by the Texas Floral Endowment in the amount of $300. This
certificate is to attend the Texas State Florists’ Association convention. In
addition to the certificate, the recipient will be presented $200 for travel
reimbursement. The applicant must be a retail flower shop employee and have a
minimum two years of floral industry experience. The applicant must be a Texas
resident. The recipient will be chosen by a drawing and must utilize the
scholarship within two years of award. There are no other restrictions.

TEXAS AGSCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER’S SCHOLARSHIP
Two, 2010 Texas Agriculture Science Teacher’s Scholarships have been
established through a grant provided by The Meinders Foundation, in the amount
of $1,000 each. The scholarships must be used to obtain the Texas Master
Florist Designation through the Texas State Florists’ Association. Any Texas
Agriculture Science Teacher may apply for the scholarship to attend the Texas
State Florists’ Association Texas Master Florist Program providing he/she meets
the criteria established by the Texas Certified Florist Program. The recipient
of this scholarship must utilize scholarship within two years of award. There
are no other restrictions.
